Frequently Asked Questions

How does hypnosis work?

Despite its ancient roots, hypnosis is often misunderstood. In reality, the hypnotic state is a natural and common experience — like when you're daydreaming, absorbed in a task, or driving on “autopilot.”

Hypnotherapy uses this relaxed state to help shift attention from the busy, analytical part of the mind to the deeper subconscious. This allows for greater focus, creative problem-solving, and openness to new ideas. In this state, many people experience time distortion, reduced self-judgement, and a heightened ability to reflect or reframe.

Hypnotherapy is not a treatment for medical conditions, but can support personal insight and behavioural change.

What does it feel like to be hypnotised? Can I be controlled?

Being in hypnosis doesn’t mean being “under” or out of control. It is often described as a calm, deeply focused state, similar to meditation or creative flow.
You remain aware, in control, and can stop at any time.

Everyone experiences hypnosis differently - some feel relaxed or dreamy, others stay mentally alert however still benefit from the process.
You won’t be made to do anything against your will; in fact, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis - the therapist acts as a guide.

Will hypnotherapy fix me?

Hypnotherapy can be a powerful tool for change, but it’s not a “magic fix.” Just as physical fitness requires effort, mental and emotional wellbeing takes commitment and practice.

Hypnotherapy helps you tap into inner resources, challenge unhelpful patterns and build new responses. When approached with openness and consistency,
t can support real and lasting progress — but you remain the driver of your change.

What happens at the first session?

Your first session begins with a conversation to understand your goals and current challenges. We will explore your background and what you’d like to
get out of therapy. The hypnosis part typically lasts 15–30 minutes and involves:

  • A gentle guided induction to help you relax and turn inward

  • A customised process tailored to your needs and goals

  • Exercises or visualisations that encourage insight or behavioural shifts

  • A safe return to full awareness, followed by a debrief and plan for follow-up.

We will also discuss strategies that you can practise to reinforce your progress.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your goals and the nature of the patterns you are working with. Some people feel a shift after just one session, while others benefit from
a more structured plan over several sessions.

Long-standing habits or thought patterns often require more time, reflection, and repetition to shift. We can work together to create a pace and plan
that feels manageable and supportive to you.

Is hypnotherapy suitable for everyone?

Hypnotherapy is not recommended for individuals experiencing:

  • Severe depression or suicidal thoughts

  • Epilepsy

  • Active psychiatric conditions

  • High levels of alcohol or drug use

In these cases, it is recommended to seek support from a qualified medical or mental health professional.
